Land Registration

Land registration generally describes systems by which matters concerning ownership, possession or other rights in land can be recorded (usually with a government agency or department) to provide evidence of title, facilitate transactions and to prevent unlawful disposal. The information recorded and the protection provided will vary by jurisdiction.

In India, the land/property ownership is one of the most controversial subject. Inadequate infrastructure to maintain land records and provide a person with conclusive titles has had its adverse effects. Moreover, property transactions are done on paper and not updated very often, leading to innumerable property disputes. This is the reason why a two-third majority of all pending court cases, in India, are property related disputes.

Land records in India are centralized and maintained in the office of sub-registrar. It is hence possible to alter or tamper the physical record by corrupt officials. The same records if stored on a distributed ledger, blockchain technology, can not be altered or tampered due to the immutable characteristic of blockchain technology.
Hence, implementing blockchain in the registry will be a revolution.
